A football fan's vision on the culture of football. Finally got my hands on this nostalgic ephemera laden book, designed by Why Not Associates (1994)

I couldn't believe my luck today. A book that I have always been in the search of, was tucked away in the depths of my local charity shop. The book in question was 'In Soccer Wonderland', written by Julian Germain and designed by the British design studio, Why Not Associates. It was in a hardback edition and in mint condition, I was licking my lips. A football fan's dream of a book, I instantly fell in love with it the first time I saw and heard about it, back in 1994.

Scrapbook
The design is like a personal scrapbook of footballing memories, ephemera and nostalgia. Sometimes, visually humorous, but a brilliantly told story on the culture of football clubs at the time, through interviews with devoted supporters and football-mad kids.

I was drawn to this book, not just because of the design but because of the emotional triggers that were there for me. It is a great fan's vision of football.

The typography style by Why Not Associates, takes me back to my Art college days. I remember their book 'typography now' which showcased examples of contemporary typography and graphic design. Haha, for us students at the time, this was the 'go to' book for inspiration on type design. Although, I do remember Emigre magazine, but that is a different story.
