Self promotion

Now this is a blast from the past. Whilst going through my old archives, I came across a self promotion campaign, I created back in 1994, for my final year graphic design course. Haha! Great memories of making this.

My design was a twist on the classic slogan, 'Beanz Meanz Heinz', changing the slogan to 'Bains Means Designs'. Inside the can, was my business card, which was designed like a 'food can label' and a CV, written out in the style of a recipe of ingredients.

Inspiration

There was a pop art influence to the wrap design, printing in various fluorescent inks and then giving it a hand drawn style to it. I have always loved coming up with creative mailers and appropriating existing products/themes and giving them a twist. I guess this food can was the beginning of it all.

For my end of year show, I had these cans stacked on shelves and on display in shopping baskets for agency owners, designers to take away. It looked pretty eye-catching. Maybe this is where my observation for analysing packaging began :)

Lessons learned: Be brave, come up with an idea that was something tactile and engaging. Do not print fluorescent colours over yellow paper :D

On the whole, I received a lot of good publicity from this mailer and it was a great ice breaker for contacting design agencies at the time.
