Feeling nostalgic

Own Label: Sainsbury’s Design Studio: 1962 - 1977 is a must for any graphic design junkie out there. It is a feast of nostalgia tapping into fond memories of a generation brought up on Sainsburys beautifully packaged goods.

My first memory of supermarket shopping was Waitrose. Every Tuesday evening, I would tag along with my parents and sister, but strangely enough it would be the colour of the food and and the interior design that I will always remember.

It wasn't until my parents decided to shop in Sainsburys (I'm not sure why, but I wish they had stayed loyal to Waitrose. Maybe I'm showing a bit of brand snobbery there).

Looking at their crisp packet designs, I am totally in awe about them. This design has always stayed fresh in my mind. At the time, I probably thought they were too loud and basic, but seeing them again now, I admire their striking beauty.

In fact, I am in love with everything that is in this book. The design portfolio of products is incredible. Photographic records and scanned original flat packets showcase a beautiful range of typography, use of colour and distinctive, revolutionary design that is still fresh and inspiring to look at today.

Definitely one for all you designers to get!

Ps. The book is also designed by one of my favourite design agencies and earliest career inspirations, FUEL Design.
